How It All Began
Get Thee To A Nunnery is a paper goods company founded in Vancouver, British Columbia by illustrator Krista Gibbard.
The name came first. As a little girl, my father often said to me: "You're getting so big! What are we going to do with you? Soon we'll have to send you to a nunnery." Over time, this imaginary nunnery became a running joke, but it also turned into something more symbolic.
When I was in my third year of illustration at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, I could sense that the end was nigh. Soon I would walk away with my degree in hand, and I'd be thrown out into the real world. The problem was, I wasn't sure what I wanted to do.
The solution came to me after a Summer living in Germany with my mother. On a whim, I created my first line of cards at her kitchen table, and when I got back to Canada, I made more. I began to realize that I had the means to build my own little haven in "the real world". My inspiration comes from vintage design, old children's book illustrations, textiles and patterns, and European folk art. Mostly, I have a deep love of all things stationery, and great respect for those who still keep up the art of hand-written correspondence.
